How To Locate and Change the Origin in Carveco
Overview
Understanding where your model's origin (X0, Y0) is located is vital for correctly aligning your toolpaths to your CNC machine's setup. This tutorial shows how to find, display, and reposition the origin — and how to update existing toolpaths to reflect the new origin.
Step 1: Finding the Current Origin
- Hover your mouse around the corners of your model.
- Observe the bottom right corner of the screen — this displays the current cursor coordinates.
- Move your cursor near the lower left of the model. If you see the values approaching
0, 0, that’s the current origin point.
Step 2: Show the Origin Point
To make the origin visible on-screen:
- Go to the View menu.
- Select Show Origin.
Tip: The origin point is shown by default in Carveco, but if you’ve hidden it previously, this option restores it.
Step 3: Change the Origin Position
- Go to the Model menu.
- Select Set Position.
- Choose your preferred origin placement:
- Use cursor (click on the canvas)
- Center Pixel
- Top Left / Bottom Right / etc.
- Click OK.
The origin marker will move to the new location.
Step 4: Update the Toolpaths
Changing the model origin does not automatically update existing toolpaths. They will appear offset until recalculated.
- Open the Toolpaths panel.
- Right-click on each toolpath and select Calculate.
- No need to reselect vectors — just click Calculate and then Close.
Important: Always recalculate your toolpaths after changing the model origin. Skipping this step will result in incorrect positioning during machining.
Summary
Summary:
You can locate the origin in Carveco by turning on the origin display or by using coordinate feedback. To reposition it — such as moving it to the center — use the Set Position tool under the Model menu. Be sure to recalculate all toolpaths afterward to reflect the new origin placement.
