How To Add Tapered Ball Nose Tools to the Tool Database in Carveco
Overview
If you've purchased new tapered ball nose tools, you'll need to add them manually into the Carveco tool database before they can be used in your toolpaths. This tutorial walks you through the complete setup, using the Radiused Engraving Tool type as a substitute for tapered ball noses.
Step 1: Open the Tool Database
- Go to the Toolpaths tab.
- Click the Tool Database icon.
- Navigate to an existing folder or create your own for storing custom tools.
- Click Add Tool.
Step 2: Define the Tool
- Description: Name your tool clearly — e.g.,
1/16" Tapered Ball Nose. - Tool Type: Choose Radiused Engraving Tool.
Tip: Carveco doesn’t have a dedicated tapered ball nose option, but the radiused engraving tool shares a similar geometry and is ideal for defining them.
Step 3: Enter Tool Dimensions
- Shank Diameter: e.g.,
0.25" - Half Angle: e.g.,
3°per side - Tip Radius: e.g.,
1/32"or0.0625" - Stepdown: Optional — for 3D carving, this can be relatively high
- Stepover: Start with
10%
Step 4: Define Speeds and Feeds
These values should ideally come from your tool manufacturer, but you can use general guidelines:
- Spindle Speed: e.g.,
24000 RPM - Feed Rate: e.g.,
30 IPM(Inches Per Minute) - Plunge Rate: Usually half of feed rate — e.g.,
15 IPM
Note: These values depend on your machine’s capabilities and material type. Always start conservatively.
Step 5: Finalize and Save
- Add optional notes — e.g., "This is my tapered ball nose — great for detail carving."
- Click OK.
- Your tool is now saved and available for any toolpath setup.
Summary
Summary:
