How To Get Accurate Machining Time Estimates Using the Toolpath Summary in Carveco
Overview
Carveco includes a built-in Toolpath Summary feature that estimates machining time. However, to get reliable results, you’ll need to calibrate it using a time scale factor based on your CNC machine’s speed. This tutorial walks you through the process of fine-tuning your time estimates for more accurate job planning.
Using the Toolpath Summary
- Click the Toolpaths tab.
- Select the Toolpath Summary icon.
- A new window appears showing:
- Total estimated machining time
- Time breakdown for each toolpath
You can save or print the summary for future reference, but be aware: the initial time estimates may be inaccurate without calibration.
Why Time Estimates May Be Incorrect
By default, Carveco doesn't know how fast your CNC machine performs rapid movements. Without this, the estimated times may appear far too long or too short.
Example: You might see an estimate like
2 hours, 23 minutes, 50 seconds for a small job that realistically takes 15 minutes.Step 1: Enter a Time Scale Factor
- In the Toolpath Summary window, set the Time Scale Factor to
1. - Click Calculate to get a more realistic base estimate.
This uses the toolpath length and feed rate to estimate time — but it’s still just a guess until you calibrate.
Step 2: Add Your CNC’s Rapid Rate
- Enter your machine’s rapid rate into the summary — e.g.,
50 meters per minute. - Click Calculate again. This updates the estimate with your machine's known movement speed.
Step 3: Calibrate With Real Timing
- Choose one toolpath to test — for example, your roughing toolpath.
- Record its estimated time from the summary — e.g.
5 minutes, 14 seconds. - Run the job on your machine while timing it with a stopwatch.
- Divide the actual time by the estimated time to get a Time Scale Factor.
- Enter this new factor into the summary and recalculate.
Advanced: You can repeat this calibration for different tools or materials to get even more precise time predictions per project type.
Summary
Summary:
Carveco’s Toolpath Summary offers useful time predictions, but for accuracy, you must calibrate it. Use your CNC’s rapid rate and a timed test run to calculate a custom time scale factor. Once set, your estimates will be much closer to real machining times, helping you plan more efficiently.
