Tips and Tricks: Rotary Model Set Up

Carveco Tutorial: Setting Up Rotary Material

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to properly set up your material for rotary machining in Carveco Maker Plus. This includes configuring the model dimensions, understanding how reliefs affect diameter, and ensuring the design fits within your stock.

🔹 Creating a New Rotary Model

  • Go to File New Rotary Model.
  • Set diameter to 4 inches and length to 12 inches.
  • Ensure the rotation axis is set to X and origin is at the bottom-left.

🔹 Adding and Wrapping Reliefs

  • Create a simple shape (e.g., square) and use the Shape Editor to add height (e.g., 0.5").
  • Use the Wrap Relief option to view it wrapped around the rotary axis.
  • Observe that this relief increases the effective diameter.

🔹 Setting Up Material Dimensions

  • Go to Toolpaths Set Up Material.
  • Set the material thickness to half the diameter (e.g., 2" for 4" diameter stock).
  • The model will automatically shrink to fit the set material size.

🔹 Understanding Relief Limits

  • Too tall of a relief (e.g., 2.5") will exceed the stock's limits (resulting in an 8" diameter).
  • If the model thickness exceeds available material, the software will block you from proceeding.
  • Use smaller relief heights to keep the max diameter under control.

🔹 Adjusting Model Position in Material

  • You can move the model within the material (e.g., drop it lower) to ensure safe machining.
  • Use side views in the 3D window to confirm your relief fits within the material limits.

✔️ Key Takeaways

  • Always set your material thickness to the radius of your stock when using rotary.
  • Reliefs increase your effective diameter — plan accordingly.
  • Too large of a relief will prevent you from continuing setup.
  • Carveco will shrink the model automatically to fit your stock if needed.
  • Use side views to visually verify the fit of your design on the cylinder.
