Carveco Tutorial: Using the Weave Tool
In this tutorial, we explore the Weave Tool in Carveco, a powerful feature for creating flowing, overlapping reliefs based on vector paths and cross-section profiles. This is ideal for rope-like textures, braids, and decorative trims.
🔹 Preparing Your Design
- Draw a closed vector shape (e.g., ellipse) with overlapping segments.
- Create a cross-section shape—typically a semicircle or arc—for the weave profile.
- Use node editing (press R) to delete spans and create a semicircle if needed.
🔹 Setting Up the Weave Tool
- Select the drive rail vector, then Shift+click the cross-section.
- Open the Weave Tool from the toolbar or press F12.
- Set the Drive Rail and Cross Section manually if needed.
- Use live preview to visualize the weave as you go.
🔹 Editing the Weave
- Adjust nodes in the cross-section for custom profiles (press E to insert, drag to reshape).
- Move nodes in the drive rail to dynamically update the path in real time.
Weave Parameters
- Length of Crossover – Controls how gradual or sharp the cross is.
- Depth of Underpass – Adjust how deep the relief dips below the top surface.
- Height of Overpass – Controls how high the overlapping section rises.
- Corner Shape – Choose between Round and Square for path corners.
🔹 Combining with Other Reliefs
Use the Relief Combine Mode to determine how the weave blends with existing reliefs:
- Add – Places the weave above the relief.
- Merge High – Blends the highest points for a smooth result.
- Subtract – Carves the weave into existing reliefs.
💡 Notes
- When you click Apply, the tool previews a second weave—this is not duplicated in the final result.
- Click Cancel to exit the live tool and return to normal view.
- You can always undo changes if adjustments don’t look right.
✔️ Key Takeaways
- The Weave Tool uses a vector rail and cross-section to generate artistic reliefs.
- Real-time previews help you customize and refine your design.
- Tweak crossover length, underpass depth, and combine mode for best results.
