Working with Vector Layers in Carveco

Vector layers help organize your designs, making it easier to show, hide, lock, and machine specific parts of your project.

What are Vector Layers?

  • Vector layers are found in the Project Tree under the Vectors section.
  • They allow you to group different vectors onto separate layers for better design and machining control.

Basic Layer Operations

  • Create a New Layer: Right-click on the Vectors section, select New Vector Layer.
  • Move Vectors to a Layer: Right-click a vector → Move Vectors To → select the desired layer.
  • Change Layer Color: Click the color box next to a layer and choose a new color.
  • Turn Layers On/Off: Click the light bulb icon to show or hide vectors on a layer.
  • Lock Layers: Click the padlock icon to prevent editing vectors on a layer.

Using Layers for Machining

  • When setting up toolpaths, you can select entire layers instead of individual vectors.
  • Simply choose the desired layer from the Vectors dropdown when creating your toolpath.

Hints, Tips & Tricks

  • Use Colors: Assign different colors to layers to visually organize complex projects.
  • Quick Selection: Right-click a layer name and select Select All Vectors for fast editing or machining setup.
  • Layer Shortcuts: Double-click a layer name to quickly rename it.
  • Hide Unnecessary Layers: Temporarily hide layers you aren't working on to reduce screen clutter.

Advanced Techniques

  • Layer-Specific Toolpaths: Set up separate machining strategies for different layers (e.g., cutouts vs. engraving layers).
  • Layer Templates: Create project templates with predefined layers (Text, Outlines, Cutouts) to speed up new jobs.
  • Batch Layer Management: Use Ctrl or Shift to select multiple layers and apply visibility or locking settings at once.

Troubleshooting

  • Can't Select Vectors? Check if the layer is locked (padlock icon). Unlock it first.
  • New Vectors Appear on the Wrong Layer: Always double-check which layer is active (highlighted) before drawing.
  • Machining Wrong Vectors: Verify you've selected the correct layer when assigning vectors for a toolpath.
  • Color Mismatch Confusion: Remember, vector color is tied to the layer color, not individual objects.
