Hello, I am a new Carveco user... Running on a Mac in Parallels VM

Hello I am a new Carveco (Maker) user. I am running the software on a Mac in a virtual machine. The VM I am using is Parallels Pro version 16.5 (build 49813). My Mac is a Mid 2104 MacBookPro with 16GB DDR3 RAM, 512GB internal SSD, 2TB external drive for Time Machine back ups. The graphics card is a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M. The Processor is a 2.5GHz Intel Quad Core i7. The computer is running under macOS Catalina 10.15.7. Logitech MX Master bluetooth 3 button mouse. The VM OS is Windows 10 home.

I use a hobby CNC machine from Carbide 3D (ShapeOko 3 standard). It has a cutting area of 16 x 16 x 3 inch and it is belt driven apart from the screw fed Z axis (Z plus)  I have owned the machine since October 2020. It has taken me quite a while to fettle it, learn it and make some useful things. I now want to create some articles that will require better software and I am trialing Carveco Maker to see if it will run successfully on a Mac in a virtual Windows environment. If all goes well, I am likely to want to move up to the next level of software (Maker plus).

I own a 4.2W laser which I have got successfully working using my ShapeOko. The laser is a JTech diode laser and I have used it to cut through 3mm plywood easily. The software for the laser is separate from the CNC machining and I went with the very complete offering from Lightburn. I should add that I have never used Windows previously so I am brand new to both Carveco and Windows. I intend to produce a few screencasts that may help people who are considering this type of approach with a Mac.

I will do my best to answer questions but Windows technical questions will not be my bag. I used a Mac since the 80s so may be able to answer questions about Mac use. I ought to be able to answer Carveco Maker questions in the screencasts which I will link to when I have posted them.

For now, the software is running fine without any signs of noticeable lag and at full screen, the computer and software operation appears to be fast and seamless.

  • Hey Jeff,

    I'm pretty new myself and have been doing ok but, I want to use my mac to run the program so, like you I installed parallels, all seems to be OK except I can't load fonts.  I have been trying to figure out a way and I'm just stuck..  I have the fonts i want to use in my Font Library on my mac, but they are not transferring over to parallels via windows 10 - any advise ??

    thanks, John

  • I don't know anything of the mac or parallels, I've been using windows since 3.5, don't understand the need to run anything in an operating system that wasn't designed to run it, in my book it's like trying to run a diesel motor with gas. There are plenty PC's out there that are cheap enough that will run carveco, then trying to find the font you want would be simple as going to   https://www.dafont.com/, I know with me saying this I suspect some flack will be flung but I am just saying the operating system that carveco was made for will operate best in that software why punish yourself........

    you can go to amazon and find some good quality pc. crud I found one that was less than 600 and I've been enjoying it.

  • Hey Mike and Barry,

    thanks for the info - I think i have 2 issues, one is the mac thing, but, i was hoping that running parallels on the mac which gets me into windows 10 would fix the issue, i will still fool around with that.  The other is carvco uses the true type or oft and that's it..  i'll have to check to see what type of font i was trying to upload.  thanks for the help.

  • Hello John;

    Simply load the fonts you want into  C:\Windows\Fonts. The proviso is that they MUST have the filetype extension .otf or .ttf. Open Type or True Type typefaces respectively. The Mac can also pack fonts into .ttc filetypes. These are also True Type but Carveco cannot use them in this form. I suspect Windows does not either because it is proprietary to the Mac. There are a few things that can be done to convert the fonts from .ttc to .ttf. The best FREE online utility I have found is this one. It is super efficient and I converted about 200 font in .ttc wrappers to .ttf.  https://transfonter.org/ttc-unpack

    Hope this helps.
