Multiple Z- Passes

Hi, I've been having issues trying to figure out how to make multiple passes in my toolpath so it doesn't put a strain on my tool during the machining process. It seems in the past, Artcam had an option to implement it but somewhere down the line the option disappeared only to be replaced by "Independent Finish Depth" in the 2018 version of Artcam and now Carveco.

Thank you.

  • The depth of each pass the tool makes is controlled by the settings in the tool database. Have a look at the parameter that says, "Stepdown". That is the pass depth or how deep the tool will go per pass. You will need to make changes to the tool database for the material you cut and speeds you run. NONE of the settings in the TDB are 'suggested' they are simply a placeholder for you to modify to your needs.

For instance, unless you are pocketing metal, I set the stepover value to 40% and forget it. It is the fastest setting that doesn't leave triangular islands in the corners of pockets.

Where to change it in CC's Tool Database:

  • Okay, Thanks!

With that said, if I set my stepdown to .03 for example, would it do 3 passes then if I set my Depth value to .09 when I'm doing an area clearance?

  • Just a FYI........ this will not work using the finish toolpath, just roughing and profile, wish it would but then thats what the roughing toolpath is for.
