anyone ever try

Trying to make dragon flames, I have made the dragon, the wings, placed the thing where he likes now my grandson wants flames coming out it's mouth, anyone ever try those? if you have, shoot even if you haven't and have an idea I would greatly love to hear, this is something sort of new for me

  • You can do a Google Image search for 'flames' and set the type to 'drawing'. Then pull it in and trace it out so that you are left with vectors that 'stack' upon each other to create planar layers. Then using the shape editor take each layer and add a height, creating a series of stepped layers. Then just use the sculpting tools to blend the steps out and smudge to a more realistic result.

You can also download any number of free STLs of flames via Thingiverse et al and modify them to meet your needs.

  • I had been working on the bloooming thing for over 2 hours and everything I tried looked like rehash stuff. went for a walk and went to one of the files i had made, started to ply with it and this is what I came up with, what's great about it is it fit the dragon.

by the way thanks Brady (nice to have someone with a good view) and for the "Thingiverse" never new of them, they have some rather nice looking stuff there, a good resource to have.

  • Mike, I don't know what your dragon looks like but I think your over thinking the detail of the flame.

I would go with something like the image on the bottom right corner, 2 R sweep and a couple of profiles and maybe a little fade.

  • here's what it'll look like, after the walk everything fell into place, odd how that is, and yes I was way over thinking it and getting frustrated to boot.

thanks Gary, what I did was make a couple sharp angles used some node editing then used the 2 rail sweep, played with the transform tool combined a few layers liked the general look then used shape editor and a oval, combined the layers, used some sculpting smudge work, voila, sweet revenge on frustration.

  • I don't know Mike looks more like a tongue than flames. For flames I would move the start outside the mouth.
