I learned a long time ago that if I used the smudging tool I could get real nice work to come out, I've used it on hair, feathers, wrinkles, some leaves, blood veins, I especially use it to give a nice look, doesn't hurt that it's real relaxing to do it that way too. Using the sculpting tools gets rid of a lot of pixelization (the blobs just need to be connected in hair and the feathers)
