Angled Face on Profile

I want to machine a part that has straight sides along most of the edges, but the top curved edge has a slope that varies between 3° at the top down to 0° where it meets the straight side (see pic below).  I having a heck of a time figuring out how to do this without making the entire cut a 3D relief, which is very excessive for time.  Since I couldn't seem to figure out how to draw it in Carveco Maker, I've used a 3D CAD program to build the model and can import it.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'm using Carveco Maker at this time.

  • Perry,

I had some angles to cut that would match up with a dado on a book shelf I think about the same, I didn't have the time to fiddle with it so I just went to the guy that sharpens my saw blades had him do a special grind on a 1/4 inch bit all it cost me was $54, though it was worth it. I'd recommend you do the same.

  • Mike,

Thanks for the idea.  The problem is that the angle changes.  The part actually sits at a 3° angle and connects to horizontal pieces.  I've made these before using a jig on a 12" sanding disk, but since I'm needing to make quite a few of these, I' looking for a uniform, repeatable method that can be done quickly by letting the CNC cut the entire shape with all angles.  If that isn't realistically doable, I' just cut out the parts and build a better jig for my sander.

  • Perry,

Thought about this for a bit.

set yourself a plane that's 3 degrees, clamp your part to it, cut your part the sides will be cut at 90 the front will be cut at 3 degrees, just don't cut the back it'll end up at 3 degrees too. 3 degrees isn't much only about .036 of an inch in .75 thick.

    I think this will work.

  • Mike,

Great idea, simple and elegant.  I'll have to cut the parts in two setups, but if I spend a few minutes up front to create a pocketed jig, this should work very nicely and I can batch the cuts.

Thanks for the help, it is GREATLY appreciated!

  • I was thinking while I was doing some sanding, then a (one of those glimmers of intelligence bounced through my space) "why not a sign bar to set up that thing" (used to use those things 45 years ago, in a machine shop in my training days) brought back some fond memories.

  • LOL, been a while since I've thought of those myself.  At this point, unless some other brilliant and even simpler idea comes along (which I doubt), I'm planning to set a piece of 3/4" MDF at 3° using a digital angle gage, pocket it out to match the shape, then set the MDF flat on my waste board.  That should effectively act as a sine plate.  I'll set the piece in the pocket and run a profile cut across the curved top section.  That should give me the desired profile as well as clean up any mess from the tabs on the first machine step.

Thanks again for the assistance.  It is very much appreciated.
