How to enforce depth on the first pass when using compression endmill

Hi dear community,

I have 1/4 inch compression endmill that has a first 0.25in of upcut. In order to get a clean cut, I am trying to get a first pass that would plunge a minimum of .25inch in order to clear the upcut portion to leave a clean finish on the top of the workpiece.

The toolpath I am struggling with is an area clearance. Final depth should be 0.38. My stepdown is 0.25, but Carveco always split the apple and run a first pass at 0.19 (half of the final depth) and a second at 0.38. I try adding the same tool a second time to the toolpath and specify a Final Tool Allowance of 0.13, hoping to generate a roughing pass of 0.25, but even then, it splits both pass evenly.

I guess I could create two entirely separate tool path, a first one with a final depth of 0.25 & stepover of 0.25, which should produce a single pass toolpath. And create a second one, final depth 0.38 & stepover of 0.38 as a second pass. I guess this could work, but it seems really combersome... is there anyway to get better control over the different pass depth in a single toolpath?

Thanks in advance!

  • You could start with the "start depth" set at .25, me though I'd do 2 toolpaths if I was using a compression bit, one) let that baby do it's thing then, two) again at full depth, or use a down cut spiral bit, in reality when doing anything other than a profile toolpath on plywood I would not use a compression bit. Everyone's different, they are a waste of money to me because I don't do much that requires them other than a profile toolpath and even that it does it's job in steps, and a 1/4 inch bit should not take that big of bite, a 3/8 would be better at full depth.
