project text onto model

hi,

can someone tell me if I start with an stl file, turn it into a model, then create some engraved text (laser), can I project that onto the model? Or any vector I import? If so, does the Z axis retract all the way to Zsafe between each vector component?

Also you automated password link form does not work on Safari on iPhone. Had to copy and paste text into Chrome.

Also wish there was a demo.

  • I can answer one of the questions for you but I don't really know for sure, you're asking about lasers or are you also including cnc routers.

If this is for cnc then your safe "Z" will go (retract) to whatever you specify in the toolpath, most of the time I set mine to 1/2 inch.

if you were to v-carve using a cnc router (I don't know anything of lasers, ok.) you can project your font onto your model, the cool thing is it will be projected onto the surface of any curve or undulation you might have, you can either give it an added height or you can use the engrave toolpath and have it projected therby giving the cnc directions to v-grove onto or into your model.

  • Tony, I am in the process of creating a tutorial for the new Maker product which will do exactly this. I will be sure to mention safe z when doing so but I think Mike has explained it pretty well.

I’ll send you a link when it is posted.
