turning a simple bitmap into a nice 3d form demo

Hi Group

I am very good with 3d cad and 3d modelling but i get a little confused with carvco as it is a bit different...... 8-)
is it possible someone could make a short video on the best way to turn a flat coloured bitmap into a nice 3d form from start to finish?

as a demo it would be good to see how the union jack below could be made into a 3d form for engraving so it is raised and featured and made to look like it is rippling in the wind with an envelope distortion or similar?

  • It all depends on how you want it to look.

You can use the different colors when using the shape editor, you could draw yourself vectors then either use the shape editor or use 2 rail sweep function, then after you get the internals you would more than likely want to give it a wavy look, right.

the imagination is a wonderful thing to have along with time to implement what you would like.

  • the cool thing about the imagination and carveco is you can let that thing fly, now I mean no disrespect to this flag only what can be done with the software, here's a few pics of what 5 or 10 minutes can accomplish nothing hard. I hope you will get to enjoy how little my imagination works.

  • I forgot to add that I import my photos, with this one I got some nice vectors, though I like clean lines so I deleted most of the nodes, then went from there. the last photo (the bottom pic) was what I got after I did a negative to clean up the model then used the cleaned up vectors and used the shape editor using merge high to clean it up.

Did I do you good (answer your request) with the photos and the video??

  • Hi Mike

thankyou for your input. as you say i need to play and use my imagination.  I find the tools in carveco a bit "different" compared to modelling in a 3d cad package but i will get used to it in time...

  • if you get the chance go to youtube and search for videos on artcam (carveco is just like it), they will help guide you, then, I like a lot of people like to answer questions (at least that's what I think).

when I got artcam I had no cad experience, no formal training, I just didn't have a TV. I would come home from work and focus on the program, this program is a lot easier than any other (so I am spoiled) and with what you can get done there is no comparison. You will get stumped (I still do at times, even after, wow 14 years??? or so(can't remember but it's been a long time 2005 I think) just enjoy a cup of coffee while being frustrated the way will come.

always remember clean lines (vectors) create clean cuts and speed up the router.

  • Is there a workflow somewhere in support that follows the process from a 2d jpeg to a 3d relieved image?

  • I am pretty sure there was a video on this topic (rippling flag) back when Carveco was still ArtCAM. You might try searching youtube for the AC videos. It is possible that the video was posted to the old AC forum (DelCams, not AD) and if this is the case I think it will no longer be available.

I have no doubt that Michael Buckly could do a video, for sure this would be a snap for him.

  • Every image is different, and each one from my experience require thought, some don't require much work, some blow the mind with the complexity, some you can do in an hour,or less, some take days and a lot of thought on what you need to have to do. The image above was one of those that took a few minutes, the home took me a few days, a few iterations to get it to what I wanted.

Did you read all the posts, I did do a walk through with the English flag I even put a video on one of my posts, if you want to have me walk you through a photo put one up here I'll import it into carveco and put my steps at making a model or models, I haven't had anything to really do but go back and finish some models I started, then had to postpone until I had time, some of them I have lost interest in (these were for myself, or I thought they would look cool) any way you look at it this program is super easy to use with photos, well really anything, but you need an imagination (a real good one) to make it fly.

by the way here's the video https://www.screencast.com/t/Idae0qb2xVP
