Bowl and Tray bit doesn't render correctly in simulation

I have a SpeTool Bowl and Tray bit that is included in the SpeTool tool spec download for Carveco Maker.  But it doesn't render correctly when doing a simulation - it doesn't show the rounded bottom. I've tried googling the problem, and I saw someone with the same problem on an Infinity forum from 2024, but it had no responses, and I can't find anything else relevant.  It's set up in teh database like this screenshot. I've also tried a different SpeTool bowl bit and it does the same thing. It has sharp corners at the bottom.

This is how it renders in the simulation -

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

  • Hi Rich,

The problem is at the tool's settings. As you can see in your screenshot, the shape next to 'Notes', it seems to be flat. I tried to create a similar tool (check image below). The Arc radius should not be less than 0.375 (half of D at least) in order to get the rounded shape you need. Also, the inner diameter should be 0.

I am not a tool/toolpath/g-code expert... but I think that should solve your issue. Give it a try!

  • Thanks for responding Elina. I don't know what 'd' (inner diameter) refers to (maybe the shaft diameter?), but 'R' I believe is correct at .25". The bit has a flat bottom and rounded edges. The radius of the rounded part is .25".

  • Now that I think about it, maybe inner diameter (d) is the flat bit - which would also be 0.25". I'll try that next time I'm on my laptop.

  • This does appear to be it.  Inner Diameter (d) is the flat bit, which has a diameter of 0.25". This seems to render correctly. Hopefully it machines correctly too (don't see why it wouldn't).
