Laser effects

New to the laser engraving, I'm trying to make a sign for a friend. The issue, when I use the TEXT function and ENGRAVER style letters, the letters are just the outline shape of the letter. How can I fill the letters in so that when I burn the letter are fill in not just outlined?

  • Hi Dennis Guessford,

For hatching, you would create an Area Clearance toolpath where the Stepover of the tool dictates the line spacing.

You'll need to add a laser to the Tool Database as a Slot Drill (for example, 0.1" diameter) where the Spindle Speed is equivalent to the laser's power. In theory, when adding the laser as a Slot Drill to the Tool Database, the specified Diameter should not matter. The specified Stepdown should be deliberately large to ensure that there is always one single pass. The Spindle Speed and Feed Rate are the important settings here: the Spindle Speed is the power with which the laser will burn as a percentage of 1000 (for example, 700 = 70% power); the Feed Rate is the same as that which is applicable when CNC machining, but consider that the slower the rate of travel, the increase in laser burn.

Thanks for your time and consideration.
