Weird material thickness issue

I have been working on a project in Carveco Maker and I just had a weird issue appear on me: My material thickness jumped to 993". No idea how or why, but I can't change it back to the 0.75" I was working with when I started making the model. I only came across it when I went to export the toolpaths and everything went crazy.

The Material Thickness under the toolpath says it is 0.75" but and when I click on Setup, it is showing me it is 993" thick.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Kyle Schmaltz,

Please confirm the manufacturer and model of your CNC machine, the controller you're using alongside it, and the exact name of the post processor option which you're currently selecting from the Save Toolpaths dialog's Machine file format list when saving your calculated toolpaths from Carveco Maker.

In addition, please save and upload your Carveco Model file (.art) using the free WeTransfer service using their Get transfer link option and then share the generated link when replying here. We can then check your toolpath settings.

Thanks for your time and cooperation.

  • The CNC machine doesn't matter as I haven't even exported the tool paths.

This link will expire in 24hrs and only can be grabbed once

There are a few extra layers in the file but the one that concerned me was the 'Drill 1/8'
I have since just redid the model and it works fine, but I am not sure if it is a bug or something I did that caused the issue.

  • Hi Kyle Schmaltz,

    Many thanks for your response.

We've successfully retrieved your shared Models.zip archive, which includes your Cribbage.art and Temp.gcode files. We'll now investigate your reported issue using those files.

Your shared Temp.gcode file confirms that you have saved a calculated toolpath from Carveco Maker. In order for us to advise you on the correct post processor to select when saving your calculated toolpaths, we require details of the manufacturer and model of your CNC machine and the controller you're using alongside it. Therefore, please provide them.

Thanks once again for your time and cooperation.

  • It a Masuter Pro and I am using Openbuilds.

But I still don't think the CNC unit has anything to do w/ this error as I get the weird issue before I even export:

  • Hi Kyle Schmaltz,

You've created a relief as part your shared model named Cribbage.art which has a Max Z height value of  993.06555", as shown below:

If you select the Relief > Reset menu option to reset the relief height to zero, you'll then find that when selecting the Toolpath > Material Setup menu option to display the Material Setup dialog, the Material Thickness is set at 0.75" once again.

In addition, the Safe Z and Home Z values in your Drilling toolpath named Drilling 1/8 End are both set as 993.06555", whereas they are set as 1.5" in each of your other five toolpaths named V-Bit Carving, Braces v2 1/16 Round, Corner mark, Braces V Carve and Brace V v2:

Please change the Safe Z and Home Z values in your toolpath named Drilling 1/8 End to 1.5" and then re-calculate the toolpath.

Thanks again for your time and cooperation.

  • Hi Kyle Schmaltz,

If you're using Openbuilds as your machine controller, please ensure that you select either the OpenBuilds (inch) (*.gcode) or OpenBuilds (mm) (*.gcode) post processor option (depending on whether you're working in imperial or metric units) from the Save Toolpaths dialog's Machine file format list when saving your calculated toolpaths from Carveco Maker, and then load the resulting .gcode file into Openbuilds.

Thanks once again for your time and cooperation.
