Tabs
I am doing a 2 sided 3D carving and I need tabs to hold the carving in place for when I do the second side. Is there any way I can prevent the ballnose cutter from machining into the tabs.

Hello George,
I am not an expert when it comes to toolpath stage. However, I have a suggestion.
When you say 'tabs' you mean the bridges that hold the piece, correct? What if you actually design those tabs to your model instead of using the Create Bridges tool? This way the ball nose cutter will not carve them away, but consider them as part of the model instead. Let me know what you think!
Elina.
That's a great suggestion Elina but I am not to sure how to add the bridges to the model.
Well in that case you can ask someone who has knowledge of Carveco's designing features to help. Or, what if you try to create a vector, excluding the bridge parts, and use it for your toolpath (Inside vector option). Something like that.. maybe that could work?
Hope that helps!
Thanks for your suggestions Elina. I did manage to incorporate the bridges into my model but the result was still the same as for your idea about creating a vector excluding the bridge parts I don't see how this would work with my 3D carve.
I have decided that my only option now is to do the carves in 2 separate halves and glue them together to make 1 whole piece.
This is also a solution.. Sorry I couldn't help you more. I'm sure there are ways to achieve this as one piece. Let's hope an expert replies. Best luck!
Hey there,
When you have to keep the ball nose cutter from cutting into the tabs on your 3D carving, adjust your CAM settings. Use a smaller tool for the tabs, or set a boundary around them in the software. This way, the tabs will hold the piece without getting cut into during carving on the second side.
